The Black Fuschia Flying Plank
Limited edition 45th Anniversary model
This guitar was built for the Glasgow based singer songwriter Anna Fuschia Scott as part of a collaboration that has been ongoing for many years, involving recording, performance and production.
The original Flying Plank was built in London in 1974 and consisted of a scaffolding plank body, a shop bought Eko Ranger neck, a cannibalised DeArmond acoustic pickup, and various bits and pieces lying around at the time. Talking to Anna in 2019 about the prospect of her acquiring a new guitar, the subject of the Plank came up, (she had encountered it in 2014 on a trip to her home county of Orkney, where we had met up to do some recording.) She seemed to get fired up at the prospect of owning one, so the die was cast.
This time I copied the Eko neck in cherry with a bubinga fingerboard, finished with nitrocellulose lacquer. The original DeArmond pickup with its unique five pole pieces, an attempt to reduce the over dominant B string on a guitar, was replicated using a Seymour Duncan stacked humbucker with a blanked off pole piece. The original Plank had a Vari Switch mounted on the rear, this was replicated on the new guitar, with an extended range of capacitors.
